LELESHWA (Tarchocanthus camphoratus)
Also called Mkalambati in Swahili, known to the Maasai as leleshwa
Steam distilled in Kenya from the flowers and leaves of the shrub.
SAFETY: Very rare, new to the aromatherapy market. Appears safe at normal, dosage. Avoid during pregnancy and lactation until established and usage information suggests otherwise.
USAGE HISTORY: Used in African herbal medicine. Also used by animals-rhinocerous and cape buffalo have been observed crushing the leaves of the tree onto their skin as an insect repellant to keep free from ticks and tse-tse flies.
PROPERTIES:
- Internal-oral; topical; inhalation
- Treatment for dandruff, psoriasis, eczema, contact dermatitis, rashes, itching, cuts and small wounds, bee stings (Antiseptic, antipruritic, cicatrizant)
- Great acne treatment, clears complexion and reduces surface bacteria
- Has natural detergent properties, ideal for use in soaps and cleansing gels, deodorant, cleans skin and pores (Antiseptic, detoxifier)
- Treats athlete’s foot and fungual skin infections (Anti-fungal)
- Enhances immune system, fights colds, flu, viruses, bronchitis, respiratory infections (Antibacterial, antiviral, anti-infectious)
- Used in Africa as a foot and leg creme for stimulating circulation and easing sore, tired feet
- Excellent insect repellant for flies, mosquitos, bees, etc. Suggested use-dilute in carrier oil or water-based creme or lotion, 2% to 0.5% is said to be as effective as commercial preparations (Insecticide)
